Shandong Unicom carries out effective anomaly traffic detection with GenieATM solution
(24th Aug 2012) Genie Networks today made an announcement that GenieATM is chosen by Shandong Unicom for network-wide anomaly traffic detection purposes.
As a fundamental telecom operator, Shandong Unicom operates subsidiaries in 17 cities and 154 counties in Shandong with asset totalling at 39billion. Shandong Unicom is one of the many subsidiaries under China Unicom. China Unicom mainly operates fixed and mobile communications service, domestic and international communications facilities, satellite IPLC service, data communications service, network access service, value-added telecom services and system integration service related to information and communications services.
The scale of the business entails Shandong Unicom to perform continuous network monitoring and anomaly traffic detection. After the completion of backbone network expansion in 2010, China 169, the MAN and provincial network egress point has reached 2130G and 640G respectively. A powerful, yet easy to deploy, solution is required to assist with effective and timely network management.
GenieATM is broadly used for anomaly traffic detection and effectively locates the source IP of attacks, such as DDoS, and worm, to allow traffic cleaning or other mitigations to be carried out. In this case, the anomaly traffic detection is expected to primarily focus on the monitoring of the direction and content of the traffic leaving the province, long-term detection of the traffic at each city, and analysis on illegal peering to determine the root cause of illegal peering.
To achieve such target, controller GenieATM 6371, collector GenieATM6171, and flow-load balancer (FLB) GenieATM 6160 is collectively deployed at the Shandong Unicom network centre. Such deployment gives Shandong Unicom the ability to generate various analysis reports including network report, sub-network report, rule-based report (specifically for illegal peering analysis), real-time traffic analysis, and anomaly traffic detection.
With the aim of providing comprehensive and high-quality broadband communications, China Unicom has been speeding up the construction of mobile communications network and strengthening the development of fixed broadband network. GenieATM provides a scalable solution which would be of helpful as the Shandong Unicom network continues to grow.
